INFOGRAPHIC: Shocking Facts About Pedestrian Fatalities

on

Pedestrians are needlessly killed every day in collisions with vehicles. In 2013, an astounding 4,735 pedestrian deaths occurred in the U.S. alone — and as pedestrian deaths continue to rise, local and state governments are left scrambling for life-saving solutions.

Whether you’re a pedestrian or a driver, you have a role in reducing the pedestrian fatality rate.

Drivers need to practice vigilance and expect pedestrians to always be present. According to a Government Highway Safety Administration (GHSA) pedestrian report, roadways with more pedestrian exposure have fewer accidents. Why is that the case? It’s simple. An increase in pedestrians creates a habit of anticipating their presence, ultimately reducing the likelihood of an accident.

Although vigilant drivers help decrease fatalities, pedestrians can be held accountable too. Forty-nine percent of pedestrian fatality collisions include drunk drivers or drunk pedestrians, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), with 34 percent of these culprits being pedestrians. It’s clear the driver is not always at fault; taking safety precautions as a pedestrian is just as vital in preventing these tragedies.
