Use these vertical route marker to identify NFSR's that are not maintained for travel in standard passenger cars. They are assigned to those roads for which the travel management strategy is to discourage passenger car travel and to encourage or accept high-clearance vehicle traffic.
Vertical route markers typically should be visible at road intersections.
When a travel management strategy of "discourage" or "eliminate" is being implemented by disguising the intersection of the road, the vertical route marker may be located far enough down the road so as not to be visible from the intersection. This prevents potential users from discovering a road by spotting a visible route marker.
